Not Enough Time

Alzheimer’s cruelly took you away, one word, one memory, one breath at a time.

Where would we be now if this wasn’t a part of your story, your ending?

I’d like to think we’d pick up with a phone call, arranging plans to see each other. You’d end the conversation telling me how excited you were to see us and that you loved me like you always did.

You and Dad would drive to Indiana for a visit the next day. Upon arriving at our house, you’d emerge from the passenger seat and immediately run to your grandson, taking him in your arms as your heart ballooned with love.

You’d give me one of your warm, familiar embraces, the kind telling me I was home again, that I was loved and safe.

We’d go out to lunch, and you would order a club sandwich and an iced tea. We’d talk about our lives and the newest happenings, as you listened intently, hanging on every word.

Dad would lament about IU sports while you rolled your eyes, pleading with him to change the subject.

Afterwards, you would head to the backyard to play with Bennett, your beloved buddy - laughing as you tossed the ball back and forth with him, knowing there was nowhere else you’d rather be.

Time stood still as we enjoyed this time in the fresh air, appreciating each other's company as we connected with nature and each other.

As the day drew to a close, you and Dad would say your goodbyes, but before getting back in the car, this time I enveloped you in a tight embrace.

I’d look in your blue eyes and tell you just how much I love you, how much I admire and appreciate you. How much I always have.

You’d search my face as I uttered the words, not saying anything in return, but your radiant smile would assure me of everything I needed to know.

That you heard me, that my words found a place in your heart. That you’d never again doubt my feelings for you. That’d you walk away from today knowing you have a daughter who loves you to the ends of this earth, beyond this physical life, beyond measure.

A daughter whose life has been inspired and shaped by your example. A daughter who continues to live her life by your beautiful example. Who knows without a shadow of a doubt, you are and will always be her angel, and who thanks her lucky stars every day because she was incredibly fortunate to call you, Mom.
