The wave of sadness and emptiness hits hard, knocking you off balance and scraping away your layers until you are just a lifeless shell of yourself.
This time around you worry you won’t come out of it— that you won’t emerge on the other side.
That you’ll be stuck in it forever.
This phase of feeling nothing. Of cold, stark numbness.
This phase where the colors have dulled, and everything is blanketed in a thick layer of fog.
This phase where even the simplest of tasks feels like climbing Mt. Everest.
This phase where the people and activities that used to bring you joy don’t spark a semblance of happiness.
This phase where you’ve lost interest engaging with life. A life you used to cherish and enjoy.
As scary as it feels right now in this moment, friend, please keep faith that things will change for the better.
Remind yourself you’ve been through it before, and you will get through it again.
Remind yourself there are people in your life who love you and are there for you. They are always a text or phone call away, ready to offer a listening ear or helping hand.
Remind yourself that each time you’ve wandered down this dark tunnel, you’ve always found the light; and each time you were reborn as a stronger, more resilient version of yourself.
A better version of yourself because you’ve experienced the lowest depths of sadness and the greatest heights of joy— this journey, while difficult, has new, powerful gifts it has brought with it — an ability to connect, empathize, and relate to others who are experiencing hardships and heartache.
A bigger heart to hold more of the good things.
An ability to approach life with a newfound appreciation for how precious life really is.
Friend, it will get better. You will get better. Just keep fighting. Keep looking for the light. It will be there waiting for you.
